SAFETY RECALL 90S04 Fuel Tank Grommet Replacement
TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS
(Reference Shop Manual Section 9-06)
REMOVAL
1.
Drain fuel tank to at least half-full level.
2.
Loosen the upper fill pipe hose clamp on the outboard side of the frame.
3.
Disconnect and lower driveshaft.
NOTE:
To maintain driveshaft balance, mark the rear of the driveshaft and the axle companion flange so they are reinstalled in their original
positions.
4.
Remove fuel tank heat shield.
5.
Position jack under fuel tank and secure tank to jack.
6.
Remove fuel tank straps and partially lower fuel tank, separating it from the upper fill pipe.
7.
Loosen hose clamp securing the grommet to the lower fill pipe. Remove the lower fill pipe and grommet from the fuel tank together and then
separate the fill pipe and grommet. (DO NOT USE A TOOL TO PRY THE GROMMET OUT OF THE TANK. IT MAY DAMAGE THE
MACHINED SEALING SURFACE OF THE TANK.) If the old grommet needs to be cut from the fill pipe use caution. DO NOT SCORE THE
FILL PIPE.
INSTALLATION
1.
CLEAN THE MACHINED SURFACE OF THE FUEL FILL OPENING ON THE TANK. Position the new grommet on fill pipe with the tapered
end of the grommet towards the fuel tank. Water or a soap and water lubricant will aid installation. DO NOT USE SILICONE LUBRICANT.
2.
Tighten hose clamp securing the grommet to the fill pipe. 26-35 in.lb. (3-4 N-m).
3.
Tighten hose clamp on outboard side of the frame. 26-35 in.lb. (3-4 N-m).
4.
Reposition fuel tank and check to make sure fuel lines are not kinked.
5.
Install fuel tank straps. Tighten bolts to 22-30 ft.lb. (30-40 N-m)
