Aerostar 2WD V6-245 4.0L (1990)
1.
Remove wheel and tire assembly, then remove rear brake drum.

Working through hole in axle shaft flange, remove axle shaft bearing retainer plate attaching nuts.
3.
Using a suitable puller, remove axle shaft from housing, Fig. 5. Use care when removing to prevent damage to oil seal.
4.
Using a suitable slide hammer, remove bearing outer race from axle housing.
5.
Remove brake backing plate and suspend from chassis with wire.
6.
If axle shaft bearing or seal are to be replaced, proceed as follows:
a. Position axle shaft in a suitable vise.
b. Drill a 1/4 inch diameter hole approximately 3/8 inch deep into bearing retainer, Fig. 6. Do not drill completely through bearing retainer, as
damage to axle shaft may result.
c. Using a hammer and suitable chisel, strike in drilled area to split retainer, Fig. 7, then remove retainer.
d. Using suitable tool, press bearing and seal from axle shaft.
7.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lubricate bearing and seal prior to installation.
b. Press bearing and seal onto axle shaft using tool No. T75L-1165-DA or equivalent, then press on retainer until it is firmly positioned against
bearing, Fig. 8.
c. Lubricate outer diameter of outer bearing race and seal with lubricant C1AZ-1950-E or equivalent.
d. Ensure outer seal is properly positioned before installing axle shaft.
e. Alternately and evenly tighten bearing retainer plate retaining nuts to specifications.
