Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Ford 7-1/2 & 8.8 Inch Rear Axle

1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove rear wheel and brake drum.
2.
Remove housing cover and drain lubricant from axle.
3.
On 8.8 inch axles and 7-1/2 inch axles with 3.45:1 ratio, proceed as follows:
a. Remove differential pinion shaft lock bolt, then the pinion shaft.
b. Push axle shaft inward toward center of vehicle, then remove C-lockwasher from end of shaft, Fig. 2.
c. Carefully slide axle shaft out from housing.

On models with 3.73:1 or 4.10:1 ratio axle, proceed as follows:
a. Remove pinion shaft lock bolt.
b. Position hand behind differential case, then push outward on pinion shaft until step on shaft contacts ring gear.
c. Remove C-lockwasher from end of axle shaft, then slide axle shaft out from housing, Fig. 3.

On all models, remove wheel bearing and seal with suitable slide hammer puller positioned into housing bore. Ensure tangs of puller are
positioned behind bearing race.
6.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lubricate new bearing with suitable axle lubricant, then install into housing bore using bearing installation tool No. T78P-1225-A or
equivalent.
b. Apply suitable grease between lips of new axle shaft seal, then install seal using tool No. T78P-1177-A or equivalent, Fig. 4.
c. Torque pinion shaft lock bolt and housing cover retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs.
