LIGHT TRUCK:
1990-91 AEROSTAR
This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include changes made to the Basic Part Number in the Dealer Coding Section.
ISSUE:
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) or lube may leak under the middle or center of the vehicle. This may be caused by the rear output seal becoming
loose and leaking on the rear of the transfer case.
ACTION:
Install a new transfer case rear output seal. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1.
Determine if there is a loss of lube or ATF fluid. There should be an indication of a fluid leak with dampness around the outer case at the rear
transfer case output seal.
2.
Drain the transfer case assembly lubricant into a graduated container.

If the amount drained is less than 35 fluid ounces, the transfer case should be replaced due to possible damage from low lube level. Refer to
the 1990/91 Aerostar Service Manual, Section 07-07F, for service details.

If the amount drained is more than 35 fluid ounces, proceed to Step 3.
3.
Replace the transfer case rear output seal.
a.
Remove the rear drive shaft and the old rear transfer case output seal. Refer to the 1990/91 Aerostar Service Manual, Section 07-07F, for
removal procedure.
b.
Clean the transfer case housing bore at the seal area to remove all oil, grease and foreign material.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THE SURFACE IS DRY.
