Aerostar AWD V6-245 4.0L (1990)

Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Working from underneath vehicle, pull rearward on front parking brake cable, clamp cable at rear of crossmember, then disconnect parking brake
cables from equalizer.
3.
Compress retainer tabs, then pull cables through rear crossmember.
4.
Support rear axle assembly, then scribe alignment marks on driveshaft and rear axle yoke to aid installation.
5.
Remove driveshaft, plug extension housing to prevent spillage of fluid, then remove rear wheels.
6.
Disconnect brake jounce hose from master cylinder tube. Plug tube, then remove jounce hose and bracket from frame.
7.
Disconnect axle vent tube from frame retaining clip.
8.
Disconnect shock absorbers from lower control arms, then lower axle assembly until spring pressure is relieved.
9.
Remove lower and upper spring retainers, then coil springs.
10.
Raise axle assembly to normal load position, then disconnect lower control arms from axle.
11.
Remove upper control arm to rear axle retaining nuts and bolts. Scribe alignment mark on cam adjuster and axle bushing, then disconnect upper
control arms from axle assembly.
12.
Lower axle assembly and remove from vehicle.
13.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. When connecting upper control arms, ensure scribe marks on cam adjuster and bushing are properly aligned as shown in Fig. 1. Do not
tighten retaining nuts and bolts until springs have been installed and axle is at normal load position.
b. When installing coil springs, ensure tapered coil (white marking) of spring faces upward.
c. When installing lower control arm to axle retaining bolt, ensure bolts are installed with bolt heads inboard of bracket.
d. Tighten upper and lower control arm to axle retaining bolts to specifications, upper spring retainer attaching bolt and nut to specifications,
and lower spring retainer and shock absorber attaching nuts and bolts to specifications.
