PAINT REPAIR
FORD:
1994 ASPIRE
ISSUE:
Paint may peel or chip off some bumper covers on vehicles built before 5/1/94. This article also contains general service procedures for repairing
bumper covers on vehicles built after 5/1/94.
ACTION:
Replace any bumper cover with peeling paint or a surface condition (scratched, chipped or gouged) larger than 0.15" (3.8 mm) on vehicles built before
5/1/94. On vehicles built after 5/1/94, refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
NOTE:
REPLACEMENT BUMPERS AND REPAIRS SHOULD BE DONE USING FORD RECOMMENDED SERVICE PROCEDURES. THE
RECOMMENDED PROCEDURES ARE NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN PROPER ADHESION TO THE THERMAL PLASTIC OLEFIN (TPO)
BUMPER MATERIAL. IF SERVICE IS REQUIRED, USE THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDED SERVICE PROCEDURE AND ONLY THE
APPROVED MATERIALS LISTED IN THIS TSB.
SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 5/1/94
If the damaged area is larger than 0.15" (3.8 mm), replace the bumper cover assembly. If the damaged area is less than 0.15" (3.8 mm), refer to the
Service Procedure listed in this article for vehicles built after 5/1/94.
SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES BUILT AFTER 5/1/94
SCRATCHED, CHIPPED, OR GOUGED BUMPER
1.
Using a DA sander with 400 grit sandpaper, loosen and remove as much of the existing paint as required, minimizing TPO surface exposure.
NOTE:
ANY EXPOSED SUBSTRATE WILL REQUIRE ADHESION PROMOTE PRIMER.
2.
Scuff-sand the entire bumper with a red Scotchbrite pad.

Thoroughly clean the bumper using a pre-paint plastic prep material. Wipe the bumper clean and tack off. (Use only approved products from
Table A.)
4.
Apply two (2) wet coats of plastic adhesion promoter. Allow for appropriate flash time. (Use only approved products from Table B.)
NOTE:
NEVER SAND ADHESION PROMOTER BEFORE APPLYING BASECOAT MATERIAL.
5.
Apply 2-3 coats of basecoat material following paint manufacturer's instructions. Allow for appropriate flash times. (Use only approved products
from Table C.)
6.
Apply two (2) full wet coats of clearcoat following paint manufacturer's instructions. Allow for appropriate flash times. (Use only approved
products from Table D.)
