Control Arm: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove pivot bolt at frame bracket.
2. Remove ball joint clamp bolt and nut at steering knuckle.
3. Remove stabilizer bar bushing retaining nut from rear of control arm, then remove bushing washer and bushing.
4. Pry ball joint stud out of steering knuckle, then disengage control arm from stabilizer bar and remove from vehicle.
INSPECTION
1. Check control arm for cracks and pivot bushing for deterioration. If bushing requires replacement, remove and install bushing using suitable tools.
2. Check ball joint stud rotating torque with suitable torque wrench. Rotating torque should be 16-27 in lb. If rotating torque is not as specified,
replace control arm.
INSTALLATION
1. Install stabilizer bar into control arm. If removed, ensure front bushing washer is positioned with dished side facing front of vehicle.
2. Raise inner part of control arm and install pivot bolt. Do not tighten bolt at this time.
3. Connect ball joint stud to steering knuckle, then install clamp bolt and nut.
4. Install rear stabilizer bar bushing and washer. Ensure rear washer is positioned with dished side facing rear of vehicle, then install attaching nut.
5. Tighten pivot bolt and ball joint clamp bolt attaching nuts to 32-40 ft lb.
