ISSUE:
Lubricant leaks at the rear axle anti-lock brake system (RABS) speed sensor may be caused by a porous axle housing mounting surface which
prevents a good seal. The sensor is located near the top of rear axle carrier between two protective fins, see Figure 18.
ACTION:
To correct this, reseal the sensor using the following service procedure.
NOTE:
1983-86 Ranger and Bronco II vehicles serviced with a 1987 level service axle housing assembly should be sealed around the sensing hole
plug prior to installation.
1.
Remove sensor hold-down bolt. Remove sensor.
2.
Clean axle mounting surface, using caution to prevent dirt from entering into axle housing.
3.
Remove old O-ring from sensor and install new O-ring. Apply a light film of motor oil to O-ring.
NOTE:
Do not let oil run down on sensor flange.

4.
Apply a continuous bead of silicone rubber sealant (D6AZ-19562-B or equivalent) to inboard base of sensor, Figure 19.
NOTE:
Sensor must be installed within 15 minutes of application of silicone or new sealant must be applied.
