This article is being republished in its entirety to revise the automatic belt tensioner and service procedure.
ISSUE:
Accessory drive belt squeal during engine start-up on 4.9L EFI engines with 70 or 100 amp alternators may be caused by a weak, automatic
belt tensioner. The new automatic belt tensioner locator pin is 13/64" (5.1 mm) larger than the old one. The new automatic belt tensioner will
not fit the existing air conditioning/power steering mounting bracket without first modifying the mounting bracket.
ACTION:
To correct this, install a new improved automatic belt tensioner which has a stronger spring and larger diameter locator pin. Refer to the
following service procedure.
1.
Remove the old automatic belt tensioner as outlined in the appropriate Light Truck Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 27-06.
2.
Remove the air conditioning/power steering bracket.
3.
Drill out the automatic belt tensioner locator pin hole in the air conditioning/power steering bracket to 17/32" (13.7 mm).
4.
Reinstall air conditioning/power steering bracket.
5.
Install the new automatic belt tensioner (E7TZ-6B209-G).
