ISSUE:
Hesitation on acceleration, erratic engine idle and/or a no-start condition on 1987 Thunderbird/Cougar vehicles with 3.8L engines or
Econoline/FSeries/Bronco vehicles with 4.9L/5.0L engines may be caused by a poor internal connection in the throttle position sensor (TPS).
ACTION:
To correct this, install a new throttle position sensor (TPS) with a date code after 6L17A using the following service diagnostic procedure.
The throttle position sensors that may have this condition can be identified by the following Engineering part numbers with date codes from 6G01A (July
1, 1986) to 6L17A (November 17, 1986).

1.
Perform EEC IV Quick Test and service as required.
2.
If service codes 53 or 63 are in continuous memory, or the fault cannot be duplicated, install a new throttle position sensor (TPS).
NOTE:
TPS made after 6L17A are marked with a white or blue dot on the back cover. This will continue for about six months of production
after 6L17A.
3.
Check to make sure installation is correct by performing EEC IV Quick Test.
