Liftgate - Cracks At Swing-Away Spare Tire Carrier

LIFTGATE - CRACKS AT SWING-AWAY SPARE TIRE CARRIER

LIGHT TRUCK:

1984-88 BRONCO II

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to expand the model year coverage to include 1984 through 1988 vehicles.

ISSUE:

Cracks that appear in the liftgate around the swing-away spare tire carrier may be caused by a liftgate assembly that cannot spread the load
created by the spare tire system.

ACTION:

Install a new liftgate assembly and new design spare tire carrier assembly that will spread the load more evenly throughout the liftgate.

1.

Remove spare tire and wheel assembly from the carrier assembly.

2.

Remove the eight (8) bolts attaching the carrier assembly to the quarter panel. Refer to the Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual, Section 47-28 for
service details.

3.

Remove the carrier assembly.

4.

Remove the liftgate assembly. Refer to the 1987 Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual, Section 44-41- 5 for detailed service instructions.

5.

Obtain a new liftgate assembly.

6.

Paint the liftgate to match.

Install the new carrier support to the liftgate using the two (2) top screws. The lower hole in the carrier support can now be used as a locator for
drilling the additional hole in the liftgate, Figure 5.

NOTE:

AN ADDITIONAL HOLE WILL HAVE TO BE DRILLED IN THE LIFTGATE TO INSTALL THE NEW DESIGN SUPPORT
ASSEMBLY. USE THE SUPPORT ASSEMBLY AS A TEMPLATE TO PROPERLY LOCATE THE NEW HOLE, FIGURE 5.

8.

Install the new stud plate and nut.

9.

With the liftgate off the vehicle, transfer all hardware from the old liftgate to the new liftgate. Refer to the Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual, Section
44-41 for service details.

10.

Install liftgate on the vehicle and check for proper operation.

11.

Install the new carrier assembly.
