Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems: Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

When the yellow anti-lock system warning lamp glows during vehicle operation, without the red brake warning lamp illuminated, a service condition has
arisen in the anti-lock brake system. At this point, a code is stored in the computer module. However, if the engine is shut off, the code will be lost. To
access flashout codes, proceed as follows:
1.
If the engine has been shut off, start the engine and drive the vehicle to reproduce the service condition.

Attach a jumper wire from the diagnostic connector, Figs. 2 and 3, to a suitable ground.

Count the number of times the yellow anti-lock warning lamp flashes. When counting the number of flashes, the code is a long pulse followed by
short pulses. The first long flash must be counted as part of the flashout code. As an example, one long pulse followed by two short pulses
indicates Flashout Code 3. Allow the code to repeat to avoid misreading. As stated previously, only one flashout code will be stored. When that
fault has been corrected, the next recognized code will be retained and flashed.

Refer to Flashout Code Chart, Fig. 11, and diagnostic charts F1 through F16, for proper diagnosis and testing procedures.
5.
After all flashout codes have been accessed and corrected, remove jumper wire from diagnostic connector.
