Heater Core - A Moan or Buzzing Sound

NOISE - MOAN - HEATER CORE (2.9L ENGINE)

LIGHT TRUCK 1986 RANGER, BRONCO II

A moan or buzzing sound may be emitted from the heater core area during engine operation. The engine speed for noise occurence varies between
vehicles. The moan sound is a fluid flow induced vibration in the heater core.

Perform the following diagnostic testing to verify the cause of the complaint, If the testing indicates a heater core moan, add one stop leak pellet
(E6AZ-19558-A) to the radiator to correct the moan condition.

Diagnostic Test Procedure

1.

Start the engine and accelerate to approximately 3500 rpm to verify the heater core moan condition.

2.

If a heater core moan sound occurs, stop the coolant flow by clamping the heater core inlet hose with a "C" clamp or locking pliers applied with
protective pads.

a.

If the heater core moan sound does not stop after stopping the coolant flow, refer to the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) Diagnosis
located in the Shop Manual.

b.

If the moan sound is stopped by clamping the heater inlet hose, stop the engine, remove the clamp and proceed to Step C.

c.

Add one stop leak pellet (part number E6AZ- 19558-A) to the radiator to correct the moan condition.

NOTE:

Tests indicate that using restrictors or pinching off the heater hoses does not stop the moan from occuring and could affect heater warm-up
performance.
