The subject concerns could be caused by loose intake manifold bolts. Before disassembling the engine, check the torque of the intake manifold bolts. If
the torque is less than 8 ft.lbs. (10.8 N-m), inspect No. 3 and No. 6 spark plugs. If either spark plug is fouled, replace the intake manifold gasket and
torque the manifold bolts to the specifications and sequence noted on Figure 24. Page 21-20-36 of the 1986 Ranger/Bronco II Truck Shop Manual also
has the torque specifications.
If the intake manifold bolt torque is above 8 ft.lbs. (10.8 N-m) or the spark plugs appear clean, or the concerns continue after an intake manifold has
been installed, disassemble the engine to check valve guide clearances and condition of piston rings and cylinder walls.
