LIGHT TRUCK:
1984-86 RANGER, BRONCO II 1986 AEROSTAR
ISSUE:
Hard shifting on 1984-86 Ranger/Bronco II and 1986 Aerostar vehicles built before 04/01/86 may be caused by excessive shaft end play.
This is caused by the fifth gear retaining snap ring coming loose from output shaft.

ACTION:
To correct this, install a new design output shaft and snap rings, Figure 13. The major improvements with the new design are:

Thicker, multi-piece snap rings in front (View A) of and behind the bearing (View B).

Addition of a second snap ring and spacer behind the bearing (View C).
^
Output shaft with wider grooves and an additional snap ring groove.
^
Multi-fit snap ring behind the bearing is select fit.
Select appropriate shims, supplied in the kit, based on end play measurement. Refer to the Light Truck Shop Manual for instructions on shim selection
and service installation procedures.
CAUTION: The new output shaft and new Output Bearing Retainer Kit MUST be used together.
NOTE:
The output shaft bearing is not needed in all cases. This item should be ordered separately if required.
