Disassembly
  1. Remove the forward clutch plates.
    1. Remove the snap ring.
    1. Remove the pressure plate, the friction plates and the steel plates.

  1. Using the special tool, place the forward clutch assembly in a press.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the forward clutch balance piston snap ring.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If damage is found to the balance piston seals, install a new forward clutch balance piston.
    Remove and inspect the forward clutch balance piston.

  1. Remove the return spring assembly.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If damage is found to the forward clutch piston seals, install a new forward clutch piston assembly.
    Remove the forward clutch piston assembly.

Assembly

  1. Soak the internal spline clutch plates in clean Automatic Transmission Fluid for 15 minutes before assembly.
  1. Inspect the forward clutch piston bore surfaces for nicks or scratches. Install a new forward clutch balance piston if necessary.

  1. Lubricate and install the forward clutch piston assembly.

  1. Install the return spring assembly.

  1. Lubricate and install the forward clutch balance piston.

  1. Using the special tool, install the forward clutch assembly using a press.

  1. Using the special tool, install the forward clutch balance piston snap ring.

  1. Install the forward clutch plates.
    1. Install the steel plates, the friction plates and the pressure plate.
    1. Install the snap ring.
