Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair
NOTE: A one-piece crankshaft rear oil seal is used for replacement on all engines. If replacement is necessary, this type of crankshaft rear oil seal must
be used. Complete crankshaft rear oil seal can be replaced without removing crankshaft.
REMOVAL
1. Remove flywheel as follows:
a. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
b. Observe position of flywheel on crankshaft flange, then remove flywheel bolts, flywheel and reinforcement plate.
2. Using a sharp awl, punch hole in crankshaft rear oil seal metal surface between seal lip and seal retainer.
3. Screw in threaded end of jet plug remover T77L-9533-B, or equivalent, into oil seal and remove seal from retainer.
4. If necessary, remove crankshaft rear oil seal retainer, proceed as follows:
a. Remove oil pan.
b. Remove crankshaft rear oil seal retainer to cylinder block bolts, then seal retainer and retainer gasket.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean and inspect crankshaft and cylinder block sealing surfaces, then clean and inspect seal retainer and cylinder block sealing surface. Remove
gasket material with wire brush if necessary, using care to prevent damaging sealing surfaces.
2. Install seal retainer with new gasket flush to cylinder block at oil pan sealing surface using straight edge. Install and tighten bolts. Cylinder block
oil pan sealing surface to crankshaft rear oil seal retainer oil pan sealing surface clearance should not exceed 0.012-0.031 inch.
3. Lubricate crankshaft flange and crankshaft rear oil seal bore with engine assembly lubricant D9AZ-19579-D, or equivalent.

4. Install seal using crankshaft rear seal replacer T88P-6701-B1, or equivalent, and rubber mallet. Seat seal 0-0.02 inch flush to rear of retainer.
5. Install flywheel as follows:
a. Coat flywheel bolt threads with oil resistant pipe sealant D8AZ-019554-A, or equivalent, then position flywheel on crankshaft.
b. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, install flywheel reinforcement plate.
c. Install and tighten bolts in alternating sequence.
d. Check flywheel runout.
6. On models equipped with manual transaxle, install clutch disc and clutch pressure plate, then transaxle.
7. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, install transaxle.
8. Run engine and check for leaks.
