Fluid - A/T: Testing and Inspection
FLUID CHECK
NOTE: Under ordinary circumstances, the transaxle fluid level need not be checked. However, if the transaxle is not functioning properly or if external
fluid leakage is indicated, check fluid as follows:
1. With vehicle on a level surface, start engine and move selector lever through all gear ranges. Allow each gear to engage completely.
2. Place selector lever in Park position, then lock parking brake.
3. With engine still running, remove dipstick from tube and wipe end clean, then slide dipstick back in tube, ensure it seats properly.
4. Remove dipstick from tube and note fluid level.
NOTE: If level is below bottom hole on dipstick and outside temperature is above 50° F, vehicle should not be driven.
5. If vehicle has been driven until reaching normal operating temperature, fluid level should be within crosshatched "HOT" area on dipstick. If
vehicle has not been driven and outside temperature is above 50° F, fluid level should be above bottom hole on dipstick.
6. Check fluid condition as follows:
a. Observe fluid color and check for burned odor. If fluid is dark brown, or black, or if odor is detected, overheating or component failure is
indicated.
b. Wipe dipstick and examine stain for solid particles, gum, or varnish. If these are present, change and inspect fluid.
