CALIBRATION
Refer to Recalibration Cross Reference Chart for calibrations.
WARNING
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE(S). PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER
ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.
ISSUE
The vehicle may stall after it has been started at ambient temperatures of -7 to 10°C (20-50°F) and transmission engagement occurs approximately 40
seconds after start-up. In addition, some 1996-97 2.5L CD4E vehicles may experience an objectionable exhaust, sulfur, or rotten egg odor may be
noticed during various driving conditions, or a forward surge when engaging the transmission after starting the vehicle. Also, on some 1996-97 2.5L
vehicles with either a CD4E or MTX-75 transmission, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate, and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
P0133 and P0153 may be stored in memory. These conditions may be caused by the Electronic Engine Control V (EEC V) calibration, the Powertrain
Control Module (PCM), and/or the Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen (HEGO) sensors.
ACTION
Reprogram the PCM for 1996-97 model year vehicles. For 1995 model year vehicles with sulfur smell concern only, replace the PCM. In addition, for
vehicles exhibiting the Sulfur Odor Concern, replace both the HEGO sensors. The new calibration addresses the Sulfur Odor Concern by changing the
fueling to reduce the sulfur reaction in the catalyst. For engagement surge concerns, the new calibration modifies air adders to control the rpm to match
the desired rpm. In addition, the new calibration protects the MIL from illuminating prematurely. Refer to the Service Procedure for details.
