Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

WARNING:

THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DISCONNECTED BEFORE ANY AIR BAG COMPONENT IS SERVICED.

IF THE AIR BAG HAS BEEN DEPLOYED, THE STEERING COLUMN MUST ALSO BE REPLACED. 

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Remove two air bag module retaining screws. Turn steering wheel 90° and remove one screw, turn opposite direction 180° and remove second

screw.

3. Disconnect air bag wire harness from driver side air bag module, and remove driver side air bag module from steering wheel.
4. Center front wheels to the straight-ahead
5. Disconnect speed control wire harness from steering wheel.
6. Remove steering wheel retaining bolt. Install Steering Wheel Puller T67L-3600-A and loosen steering wheel from shaft.

CAUTION:  Be sure air bag sliding contact wire harness does not get caught on steering wheel when lifting off steering shaft to prevent damage.

7. Route air bag sliding contact assembly wire harness through opening in steering wheel as steering wheel is lifted off shaft.

INSTALLATION

1. Make sure that vehicle's front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

CAUTION:  Be sure wiring does not get trapped between steering wheel and air bag sliding contact or air bag monitor will detect a fault.

2. Route air bag sliding contact wire harness through steering wheel opening and position steering wheel on steering shaft. The steering wheel and

steering shaft alignment marks should be aligned. Be sure air bag contact wire is not pinched.

3. Install new steering wheel retaining bolt. Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
4. Connect speed control wire harness to steering wheel and snap connector assembly into steering wheel clip.
5. Connect air bag wire harness to driver side air bag module and install driver side air bag module to steering wheel. Tighten drivers side air bag

module retaining screws to 11-13 Nm (8-10 ft. lbs.).

6. Connect battery ground cable. Verify air bag warning indicator.
