Temperature Gauge: Description and Operation
With Electronic Instrument Cluster

Coolant Temperature Gauge

The engine coolant temperature gauge has the following features:
-

This gauge is identified by a thermometer symbol.
-

H means high temperature.

-

C means low temperature.

-

NORM means normal temperature.

-

This gauge indicates the engine coolant temperature based on an operating resistance range from the engine coolant temperature sender (
13,000 ohms maximum to 200 ohms minimum, from low to high temperature, where resistances above 13,000 ohms indicate temperatures
below the range of the gauge).

-

The number of bars lit increases as the engine warms up (from the lowest bar into the normal operating region).

-

It is acceptable under certain driving conditions, such as heavy traffic or stop-and-go driving in hot weather, for the bar at the top of the
NORM region to light.

Diagnostic Bars

Diagnostic bars on this gauge indicate that the resistance of engine coolant temperature sender is lower than the operating resistance range (less
than 200 ohms).

When the top two and bottom two bars appear on the engine coolant temperature gauge, a short circuit may be present.

-

When the bottom bar, the thermometer and TEMP displays appear, an open circuit may be present.

Fail Safe Cooling

The fail safe cooling system allows limited engine operation in the event of excessive engine temperature. The fail safe cooling system has two
modes of operation. Each mode is based on engine temperature measured by the Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor.

Once the first temperature threshold (124°C) is met:
-

All eight bars of the temperature gauge will illuminate (H).

-

The thermometer symbol will flash.

-

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (CHECK ENGINE) will illuminate.

-

A tone will sound for one second every five seconds for one minute. If the ignition switch is cycled to OFF and then ON, the one minute
duration will be reset.

-

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will disable four of the fuel injectors.

Once the second temperature threshold (166°C) is met:
-

All eight bars of the temperature gauge (H) and the thermometer symbol will flash simultaneously.

-

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (CHECK ENGINE) will remain illuminated.

-

A tone will continue to sound for one second every five seconds until the PCM disables all the fuel injectors resulting in engine shutdown.

Engine Coolant Temperature Sender

Engine coolant temperature sender:
-

is mounted into the engine intake manifold.

-

sends a signal to electronic instrument cluster which varies with the resistance of engine coolant temperature sender relative to the engine
coolant temperature.
