Muffler

WARNING:  THE NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM IS VERY HIGH. NEVER ATTEMPT TO
SERVICE ANY PART OF THE SYSTEM UNTIL IT HAS COOLED. BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL WHEN WORKING AROUND THE
THREE WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER (TWC). THE TEMPERATURE OF THE CONVERTER RISES TO A HIGH LEVEL AFTER
ONLY A FEW MINUTES OF ENGINE OPERATION.

NOTE:  The production muffler and tailpipe assembly is one piece. The service muffler and tail pipe is a two-piece assembly. To remove the production
tailpipe and muffler assembly, it will be necessary to cut the exhaust pipe at a point directly over the rear axle assembly.

REMOVAL

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist that permits the rear axle assembly to lower to the full extent of its travel.
2. Remove the muffler clamp at the exhaust inlet pipe-to-muffler inlet connection.
3. Cut exhaust pipe at a point directly over the rear axle assembly.
4. Remove exhaust hanger insulators from exhaust outlet pipe frame brackets (three places on single, six places on dual).
5. Separate the muffler from the exhaust inlet pipe and remove the muffler assembly.

NOTE:  It may be necessary to heat the inlet pipe-to-muffler joint to ease removal.

INSTALLATION

1. Slide a new muffler clamp over the outlet end of the exhaust inlet pipe.
2. Position the muffler on the exhaust inlet pipe and loosely install the muffler clamp. Make sure that the tab is fully inserted into the locating slot and

muffler.

3. Position the muffler and install the exhaust hanger insulators. Replace any exhaust hanger insulator showing signs of wear or deterioration.

NOTE:  For ease of assembly, lubricate exhaust hanger insulators with Silicone Lubricant D7AZ-19553-AA or equivalent meeting Ford
specification ESR-M13P4-A prior to installation of muffler.
