Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Replacement
REMOVAL
1. Remove steering shaft U-joint shield.
2. Tag power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose for future identification.
3. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose from the steering gear. Plug the lines and ports in the steering gear to
prevent entry of dirt.
4. Remove the clamp bolt retaining the steering column intermediate shaft coupling to the steering gear.
5. Raise vehicle on a hoist. Remove the sector shaft retaining nut and lockwasher. Discard lockwasher.
CAUTION: Do not damage the seals or steering gear housing. Do not use a non-approved tool such as a pickle fork.
6. Remove the steering gear sector shaft arm from the steering gear sector shaft with Pitman Arm Puller T64P-3590-F. Remove the tool from the
steering gear sector shaft arm.
7. Support the steering gear. Remove the steering gear retaining bolts.
8. Work the steering gear free of the steering column intermediate shaft coupling and remove the steering gear.
9. If the steering column intermediate shaft coupling did not come off with the steering gear, lift it off the power steering gear input shaft and control.
INSTALLATION
1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
2. Center the power steering gear input shaft and control with the centerline of the two indexing flats at four o'clock as shown.
3. Slide the power steering gear input shaft and control into the steering column intermediate shaft coupling and position steering gear into place on
the frame side rail. Install steering gear retaining bolts. Tighten to 66-90 Nm (49-66 ft. lbs.).
4. Make sure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Install the steering gear sector shaft arm on the steering gear sector shaft. Install the
lockwasher and nut. Tighten nut to 270-340 Nm (200-250 ft. lbs.).
5. Move the steering column intermediate shaft coupling into place on the power steering gear input shaft and control. Install retaining bolt. Tighten
to 27-41 Nm (20-30 ft. lbs.).
6. Connect the power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose to the steering gear. Tighten the lines.
7. Fill the power steering pump reservoir. Turn steering wheel from stop-to-stop to distribute fluid.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
10. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from left to right. Inspect for fluid leaks.
11. Install steering shaft U-joint shield.
