Camshaft Gear/Sprocket: Service and Repair

Removal 

NOTE:  Because this is not a free wheeling engine, if it has "jumped time," there will be damage to the valves and/or pistons and will require the
removal of the cylinder heads.

CAUTION:  At NO TIME, when the timing chain(s) are removed and the cylinder heads are installed, may the crankshaft and/or camshaft(s) be
ROTATED. Failure to follow these directions will result in valve and/or piston damage.

1. Remove all necessary components to access the timing chains.
2. Remove crankshaft position sensor tooth wheel.

3. ROTATE engine to No. 1 Top Dead Center (TDC). 

4. Install Camshaft Positioning Tools or equivalent on flats of camshafts as shown.

NOTE:  This will prevent accidental rotation of the camshafts.

5. Remove two bolts retaining Right Hand tensioner to cylinder head and remove tensioner.
6. Remove Right Hand tensioner arm.
7. Remove two bolts retaining Right Hand chain guide to cylinder head and remove chain guide.
8. Remove Right Hand chain from camshaft and crankshaft gears.
9. Remove Right Hand crankshaft gear.

10. If necessary, remove Right Hand camshaft sprocket retaining bolt, washer, gear, and spacer.

NOTE:  Camshaft Positioning Tools or equivalent must be installed on camshaft to prevent camshaft from rotating.

11. Remove two bolts retaining Left Hand tensioner to cylinder head and remove tensioner.
12. Remove Left Hand tensioner arm.
13. Remove two bolts retaining Left Hand chain guide to cylinder head and remove chain guide.
14. Remove Left Hand chain from camshaft and crankshaft gears.
15. Remove Left Hand crankshaft gear.
16. If necessary, remove Left Hand camshaft sprocket retaining bolt, washer, gear, and spacer.

NOTE:  Camshaft Positioning Tools or equivalent must be installed on camshaft to prevent camshaft from rotating.

CAUTION:  DO NOT ROTATE crankshaft and/or camshaft(s).
