This article supersedes TSB 06-23-18 to update the vehicle model years.
ISSUE
Some 2004-2007 E-150 - E-350 vehicles equipped with a 4.6L or 5.4L engine and mid-ship fuel tank may experience a "Slow to Fill" condition.
ACTION
Use the Service Procedure to check the canister vent tube for a spider web or other obstruction before replacing the fuel tank.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) lines where it connects from the fuel tank to the carbon canister assembly inlet. If the tank can be
easily filled, the carbon canister and EVAP lines should be investigated for restriction, continue to Step la. If the fuel tank is still difficult to fill
with the carbon canister disconnected, proceed to Step 2. (Figure 1)
a.
Spider webs and other debris in the vent hose 5C2Z-95327-CA may restrict the hose. Disconnect and blow out vent hose with shop air or
roll a bearing down the hose to remove the debris.
b.
Disconnect the canister vent valve (CVV) hose and apply a low pressure air source 15 psi or less (103 kPa or less) to the carbon canister
inlet. If there is no free flow past the CVV, the CVV is failed or frozen closed. Replace the CVV.
c.
If you have free flow through the CVV and the vent hose, the restriction must be at the Separator Assembly (Dust Box). Check the Canister
Separator Assembly for damage, dirt, water or ice contamination and replace the Separator Assembly.
2.
If the fuel tank is still difficult to fill with the carbon canister disconnected, replace the fuel tank assembly.
