Shifter A/T: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove the steering column release lever by unscrewing from the steering column.
2. Turn the key to the RUN position. Using a 1/8-inch drift, press the ignition switch lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole and remove

the ignition switch lock cylinder.

3. Remove the retaining screws of the instrument cluster mask and remove the cluster mask.
4. Remove the four retaining screws from the lower steering column shroud. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.

NOTE:  For vehicles with an E40D transmission, a protective cover (such as a rag) must be placed between the gearshift lever and the steering
column shroud opening during removal. This will prevent damage to the shrink wrap on the gearshift lever.

5. Using a small screwdriver, pry the rubber steering column opening weather seal  from the pedestal on the steering column lock cylinder housing.
6. On vehicles equipped with an E40D transmission, disconnect the lockout switch.
7. Using a small drift, tap the gearshift lever pin  from the bottom for removal. Discard the gearshift lever pin. Remove the gearshift lever.

INSTALLATION

1. Insert the shift lever through the hole in the rubber cover. Position the cover on the gearshift lever.
2. Verify that the anti-rattle clip of the gearshift lever is correctly positioned in the shift tube shift lever socket. Replace if required.
3. Insert the gearshift lever.
4. Install a new gearshift lever pin into position and tap in place until the head seats against the gearshift lever.
5. On vehicles equipped with an E40D automatic transmission, connect the lockout switch.
6. Position the steering column opening weather seal on the steering column. Insert the lower attachment into the slot on the side of the steering

column.

7. Position the upper attachment on the gearshift lever pin.
8. Install the upper and lower steering column shroud with four screws.

NOTE:  For vehicles with an E40D transmission, a protective cover (such as a rag) must be placed between the gearshift lever and steering
column shroud opening during removal. This will prevent damage to the shrink wrap on the gearshift lever.

9. Install the instrument cluster mask and retaining screws.

10. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder into the steering column flange.
11. Install the steering column release lever onto the steering column.
12. Check for proper start in PARK and NEUTRAL.  Make sure the start circuit cannot be actuated in the DRIVE or REVERSE positions and the

steering column is locked in the LOCK position.
