Pinion Gear: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Remove the axle housing cover and drain the axle.
2. Remove the axle shafts.
3. Wipe the lubricant from the internal working parts and visually inspect the parts for wear or damage.
4. Remove the differential case.
5. Mark the driveshaft flange and the driveshaft rear axle companion flange for correct alignment during installation.
6. Remove the four rear driveshaft bolts and disconnect the rear driveshaft.
7. Install a Nm (pound-inch) torque wrench on the pinion nut and record the torque required to maintain rotation of the pinion through several
revolutions.
8. Remove the rear axle companion flange and pinion nut.
9. Install Pinion Shaft Thread Protector and, with a soft-faced hammer, drive the pinion assembly out of the front bearing cone and remove it through
the rear of the housing.
