Using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS), or the Service Bay Technical System (SBTS) and the New Generation Star Tester (NGS) with
Rotunda flash cable (007-00531) and Rotunda flash card (007-00532), verify the calibration level of the vehicle. If the calibration level is R-12 or
higher, return vehicle to owner and claim for an inspection.
If the calibration level is lower than R-12, reprogram the PCM to the R-12 or higher revision level. Submit a claim for reprogramming under 97T02
Obtain an Authorized Modifications label and list the date, your dealer P & A code, indicate the change authorization as 97T02, and annotate on the
label "Reprogrammed PCM Per SSI 97T02". Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information label suitable for installing
the label. Clean the surface, apply the label, and cover it with a clear label overlay. Return the vehicle to the customer

Affected Vehicles
Certain 1997 Econoline trucks equipped with 5.4L and 6.8L engines having powertrain control module calibration codes 7-46K, 7-46Q, 7-74C, 7-74S,
7-74T, 7-74U, 7-74V, 7-96E, 7-96J, 7-96T, 7-96W, 7-96X, and 7-96Y having revision levels ("R" levels) R-10 or lower. Affected Econolines were
produced at the Lorain Assembly Plant from start of 1997 production through March 21, 1997.
Reason For This Special Service Instruction
The subject trucks were built with powertrain control module calibration code strategy features that may cause elevated exhaust emissions under certain
vehicle cruise driving conditions.
Special Service Instruction
The vehicle's Powertrain Control Module must be reprogrammed using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS), or the Service Bay Technical
System (SBTS) and the New Generation Star Tester (NGS).
NOTE:
Reprogramming the PCM using program code 97T02 is the only authorized service chargeable to this Special Service Instruction. This service
involves the reprogramming of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) without diagnosis. Any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) must be diagnosed
before reprogramming the PCM and are not chargeable to this program. Claims will be audited to verify that this direction is being followed.

There will be no owner notification; this is a Special Service Instruction as part of applicable emissions warranty service.
