Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair

REMOVAL 

1. Remove the axle shaft.
2. Remove the oil seal from the axle tube. Discard the oil seal.

NOTE:

-

If only the seal needs to be replaced, it can be pried out of the tube bore. Use care to avoid damaging the seal bore.

The seal can be removed with the rear wheel bearing as a unit in the following step.

3. Pull the rear wheel bearing from the axle tube, using the (A) Front Hub Remover/Replacer, the (B) Hub Remover Adapters (coarse thread) and the

(C) Rear Axle Bearing Remover, as shown.

WARNING:  Wear safety glasses when removing the rear wheel bearing. The rear wheel bearing can fly apart during removal. 

4. Clean and inspect the rear wheel bearing bore.

(1) Wipe the bore with emery cloth to ensure a smooth surface.
(2) Clean out the bore with a standard metal-cleaning solvent. Wipe this area clean, making sure it is free of dirt or any other contaminants.

NOTE:  The rear wheel bearing bore must be free from nicks and burrs. If bore has burrs or spelled areas and a new rear wheel bearing is
installed, early failure can result.

INSTALLATION 

1. Coat the rear wheel bearing with differential lubricant for easier assembly and to prevent possible scoring of the tube bore.

2. Install the rear wheel bearing, with identification numbers on the rear wheel bearing facing out. Use the (A) Front Hub Remover/Replacer, (B)

Hub Remover Adapters, (C) Step Plate and (D) Rear Axle Bearing Replacer.

NOTE:  During bearing installation, make sure the rear wheel bearing is not cocked in the bore.
