EEC IV SELF TEST - CODE 23 - (4.9L)

LIGHT TRUCK 1984 E, F, & BRONCO

Trucks built between Job No. 1 and January 15, 1984 may indicate a Code 23 failure when running a Quick Test which may not be associated with a
drive concern.
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) out of range is caused by a slight mismatch in the test range between the Microprocessor (MROM) and the TPS.
Correct by revising the TPS Index by 8~.

If a Code 23 appears during normal diagnostics on the above early models, perform the following revision (Refer to Figure 22).
1.

Remove the TPS No. 2 and Plate No. 3 per 1984 Truck Shop Manual, Volume B, page 24-06-11 (Figure 22).

2.

Remove the TPS Drive Coupler No. 4 and screw No. 42, at the end of the throttle shaft.

3.

Remove the lever No. 43.

4.

Replace the removed lever with new part E4PZ- 9538-E washer.

NOTE:

The part number on the washer must be outboard when assembled; otherwise, the TPS would be indexed in reverse.

5.

Reinstall the screw, TPS Drive Coupler, Plate and TP Sensor.

CAUTION: INSTALL THE TP SENSOR WITH THE PIGTAIL POINTING UP (TOP OF CARBRURETOR) WHEN ENGAGING WITH THE

DRIVE COUPLER; THEN ROTATE COUNTERCLOCKWISE TO POSITION PRIOR TO INSTALLING SCREWS.

6.

Torque the throttle shaft screw to 23-25 in.lbs., loctite the TPS attaching screws and torque to 14- 16 in.lbs. per Shop Manual page 24-06-13.

The Failure Code 23 should no longer appear during a Quick Test. If it continues to appear, further diagnosis is required to determine the cause. Refer to
the Engine/Emission Diagnosis Manual, Volume H.
