IDLE ROUGH/EXHAUST LEAK/ENGINE NOISE (4.9L BUILT BEFORE 6/10/85)

LIGHT TRUCK 1984-85 E AND F SERIES, BRONCO

Rough idle, exhaust leak or engine noise (which may be misdiagnosed as piston slap) may be caused by the intake/exhaust manifold fasteners losing their
torque.

The manifold to cylinder head bolts may loosen, allowing the manifolds to leak.

When the intake manifold loosens, a vacuum leak will occur causing a poor or rough idle.

When the exhaust manifold loosens, an exhaust leak or noise will occur (an exhaust leak may be misdiagnosed as piston slap).

The torque on the manifold bolts should be 22-32 ft.- lbs. (30-42 N-m). If it is necessary to retorque any of the manifold bolts all fasteners MUST be
replaced. Install eleven (11) new bolts (390530-S2) and two (2) studs (390528-S2) using new washers (E6TZ-9443-A) and torque to 22-32 ft.lbs. (30-42
N-m) in the sequence shown in Figure 20.
The existing manifold bolts, studs and washers must not be re-used. The new washers are of a new material and the bolts and studs use a prevailing
torque design, which will hold the torque better.
