Backing Plate: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Remove the brake drum and the rear brake shoes and linings.
2. Remove the axle shaft or the axle shaft and rear hub, if so equipped.
Cable Retainer
3. Compress the (A) cable retainer and pull the (B) parking brake rear cable and conduit from the (C) brake backing plate.
Rear Wheel Cylinder
4. Remove the rear wheel cylinder.
a. Disconnect the brake line fitting.
b. Remove the two rear wheel cylinder bolts.
c. Remove the rear wheel cylinder.
5. Remove the four hacking plate-to-axle flange nuts and bolts and the brake backing plate.
INSTALLATION
Follow the removal procedure in reverse order, noting the following:
Backing Plate To Axle Nut Specifications

Tighten backing plate bolts to 68-115 Nm (51-84 ft. lbs.).
