Differential Case
Removal
NOTE:

When changing ratios on rear axles, it may be necessary to change the differential case along with the ring gear.

Ratios 3.54:1-4.10:1 incorporate a thick differential case flange and a thick ring gear.
1. If necessary due to size limitations, remove the rear axle from the vehicle.
2. Remove the axle housing cover plate bolts and the axle housing cover. Tip the rear axle differential carrier to allow the lube to drain completely.
Clean the cover face of the rear axle differential carrier, making sure it is free from any nicks. Remove old RTV gasket material.
3. Remove the rear axle retaining bearing caps.
NOTE:

Before removing the differential case and ring gear, pull the axle shaft out far enough for clearance to remove the differential case.

Mating letters are stamped on the rear axle bearing retaining caps and the rear axle differential carrier. The letters are in vertical and
horizontal positions. Note the positions of the letters before removal. Matching the letters is important at the time of assembly.
