ISSUE:
A new Rotunda dynamic timing meter adapter 078-00201 is available to assist technicians in setting the engine timing on 7.3L diesel engines.
The 1988 7.3L diesel engine will use line pressure timing as a more accurate and consistent engine timing set procedure. This will result in
better emissions compliance, improved fuel economy and performance, and will make the technician's job easier.
ACTION:
Line pressure timing is recommended on the 7.3L diesel engine instead of the currect luminosity timing because it improves engine timing
accuracy and simplifies the service timing set procedure. Line pressure timing is independent of: 1) engine conditions (i.e., compression,
plugged fuel filter, etc.), and 2) fuel quality rating (i.e., cetane).
NOTE:
Use of luminosity timing equipment on the 7.3L diesel engine is not recommended. No luminosity timing specification will be provided.
The service procedure for the new Rotunda Dynamic Timing Meter Adapter is outlined below. This service information will also appear in
Section 22 of the 1988 Engine/Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual, Volume H.
Setting Injection Timing - Dynamic Timing
1.
Bring engine up to normal operating temperature.
NOTE:
When checking or setting dynamic injection timing on the 7.3L diesel engine, it is required that the engine be at normal operating
temperature (192~F to 212~F/88~C to 100~C). This temperature is necessary to make sure of stabilized engine operation.

Stop engine and install Dynamic Timing Meter, Rotunda 078-02000 or equivalent, by placing magnetic pick-up in timing pointer probe hole,

NOTE:
To prevent incorrect readings, make sure that vibration damper is clean and free of foreign debris and rust scale. If required, clean the
area to remove rust and apply a light coat of paint to area.
