Axle Shaft: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies and the brake drums.
3. Remove the axle housing cover and drain the lubricant from the rear axle.

Clean the gasket material from the axle housing cover and the rear axle housing.
4. Remove the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
NOTE: Dana semi-float rear axles may be equipped with a differential pinion shaft lock bolt that is either coated with Loctite or has torque
prevailing threads. The two types of differential pinion shaft lock bolts can be identified as follows. The Loctite (or equivalent) treated differential
pinion shaft lock bolt has a 5/32-inch hexagram socket head and must not be reused under any circumstances. The torque prevailing differential
pinion shaft lock bolt has a 12-point drive head. If the rear axle is equipped with the torque prevailing differential pinion shaft lock bolt, it may be
reused up to four times (four removals and installations). When in doubt about the number of times the torque prevailing differential pinion shaft
lock bolt has been reused, replace the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
5. Lift out the differential pinion shaft.

The pinion shaft is a slip-fit design and may be removed by hand.
