Brake Drum: Service and Repair

Removal
CAUTION: To reduce the possibility of uneven braking, always install new rear brake shoes at both ends of an axle.
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. CAUTION: Use of a brake drum puller or a torch is not recommended. Brake drum distortion can result.
NOTE: If the brake drum is seized to the wheel hub pilot diameter, tap the center of the brake drum between the wheel studs.
If the brake drum binds on the brake shoes, retract the brake shoes.
1. Move the brake shoe adjuster actuator lever away from the adjuster.
2. Rotate the brake shoe adjuster screw upward to retract the brake shoes.
3. Remove the brake drum.
Installation
1. Using the special tool, measure the inside diameter of the brake drum.

Install a new brake drum if the inside diameter exceeds the specification stamped on the outside face of the brake drum.
2. Adjust the rear brakes, refer to Brake Shoe Adjustment.
3. Position the brake drum on the vehicle.
