ISSUE:
A "creaking" noise may come from the RH cowl side of the car. This may be caused by minor sheet metal movement.
ACTION:
Install a blind rivet into the RH cowl sheet metal. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1.
Stop the windshield wipers in the vertical position.
2.
Remove the lower windshield garnish.
3.
Mark or scribe the hood hinge locations.
4.
Remove the hood.
5.
Remove the cowl weatherstrip from the RH fender only.
6.
Remove the three (3) fender-to-apron attaching screws. Refer to the 1991 Escort/Tracer Shop Manual, Page 01-02-4, for service details.
7.
Open the front door and remove the single fender-to-cowl attachment screw. Refer to the 1991 Escort/Tracer Shop Manual, Page 01-02-4, for
service details.

8.
Gently pull the fender outward to expose the sheet metal area shown in Figure 1.
9.
Measure from the hood hinge as shown in Figure 1 and drill a 3/16" (4.763 mm) diameter hole in the sheet metal.
10.
Apply rubberized undercoating to the drilled hole.
11.
Install a blind rivet as shown in Figure 1.
12.
Apply rubberized undercoating to the installed blind rivet.
13.
Place the fender back (flush) to its original location. Repeat Step 1 through 7 in reverse order.
