Valve Clearance: Adjustments

    The 1.9L engine is equipped with an overhead camshaft and hydraulic lash adjuster. Valve stem to rocker arm clearance is measured with tappet
completely collapsed. Perform the following procedure when measuring valve tappet clearance:

1.

Connect an auxiliary starter switch, then crank engine with ignition switch OFF until No. 1 piston is on TDC after compression stroke.

2.

Position tappet collapser tool No. T8 1P-6500-A or equivalent on rocker arm, then slowly apply pressure to bleed tappet. Continue to apply
pressure until lifter plunger bottoms. Hold tappet in this position and check clearance between rocker arm and valve stem tip using a suitable feeler
gauge, Fig. 2. Collapsed tappet clearance should be .000-.177 inch, with preferred clearance of .087 inch. If clearance is less than specified, check
for worn or damaged fulcrums, tappets or camshaft lobes.

3.

With No. 1 piston at TDC end of compression stroke, check the following valves as outlined: No. 1 and 2 intake and No. 1 exhaust.

4.

Rotate crankshaft 180° from present position, then check the following valves: No. 3 intake & No. 3 exhaust.

5.

Rotate crankshaft 180° from present position, then check the following valves: No. 4 intake & Nos. 2 and 4 exhaust.
