A/C - Suction Accumulator/Drier and Hose Replacement
AIR CONDITIONING-SUCTION ACCUMULATOR/DRIER AND HOSE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE-GT MODELS BUILT AFTER 3/20/89

1989 ESCORT
ISSUE:
A new design suction accumulator/drier and hose assembly is used on all 1989 Escort GT models built after March 20, 1989.
ACTION:
Replacement of the new design suction accumulator/drier and hose assembly requires the following new service procedure.
NOTE:
THE SUCTION ACCUMULATOR/DRIER AND HOSE ASSEMBLY SHOULD BE REPLACED WHENEVER A MAJOR A/C SYSTEM
COMPONENT SUCH AS THE COMPRESSOR, EVAPORATOR CORE, CONDENSER OR REFRIGERANT LINES ARE REPLACED.
REMOVAL
1.
Discharge the refrigerant from the A/C system. Refer to the 1989 Tempo/Topaz/Escort Shop Manual, Volume 1 of 2, Section 36-32 for service
details.
CAUTION: OBSERVE ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
2.
Remove the fuel filter bracket and move the fuel filter to one side. Do not disconnect the fuel lines.
3.
Disconnect the accumulator/drier and hose assembly from the evaporator core and A/C compressor manifold. Use the spring coupling tool
T88P-19623-AH.
4.
Disconnect the liquid line from the evaporator core. Use the spring lock coupling tool T81P-19623-G2.
5.
Remove the suction accumulator/drier top attaching nut.
6.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
7.
Disconnect the catalytic converter and backfire hose. Position the assembly aside.
8.
Drain the antifreeze.
9.
Disconnect the lower heater hose (heater outlet tube).
10.
Loosen the heater tube bracket.
11.
Remove the accumulator/drier mounting bracket lower attaching screw and remove bracket.
12.
Remove the accumulator/drier and hose assembly from the car.
INSTALLATION
1.
Position the accumulator/drier and mounting bracket in the car.
2.
Install the mounting bracket lower attaching screw.
3.
Tighten the steel heater tube bracket.
4.
Connect the lower heater hose
5.
Connect the catalytic converter and backfire hose.
6.
Lower the car from the hoist
7.
Install the accumulator/drier attaching nut.
8.
Connect the liquid line to the evaporator core.
9.
Connect the accumulator/drier and hose assembly to the evaporator core and A/C compressor manifold.
10.
Move the fuel filter into position and install the fuel filter bracket.
