Coolant Level Indicator Lamp: Testing and Inspection

Warning Lamp Does Not illuminate With Low Coolant Level Condition

1.

Place ignition switch in the On position. Low coolant warning lamp on instrument panel should be illuminated, if not, check for the following:
a. Check bulb and replace if necessary.
b. If bulb is satisfactory, proceed to step 2.

With coolant level in coolant recovery bottle 1 inch below the Cold Full mark, check if instrument panel warning lamp is illuminated with engine
operating and note the following:
a. If lamp is illuminated, system is operating properly.
b. If lamp is not illuminated, proceed to step 3.

Disconnect low coolant sensor electrical connector and connect a jumper wire between electrical connector terminals. Place ignition switch in the
Run position and note the following:
a. If instrument panel warning lamp is not illuminated, check for open circuit between sensor and warning lamp and repair as necessary.
b. If lamp is illuminated, proceed to step 4.

4.

Remove low coolant sensor from coolant recovery bottle and check for continuity between sensor terminals, with float at lowest position of travel.
Note the following:
a. If continuity exist, sensor is satisfactory.
b. If continuity does not exist, replace sensor.

Warning Lamp Remains Illuminated With Sufficient Coolant Level

Ensure coolant level is 1/2 inch above the Cold Full mark on coolant recovery bottle. Add coolant as necessary to bring coolant to proper level and
check warning lamp. If warning lamp is still illuminated, proceed to step 2.

2.

Disconnect electrical connector from coolant sensor and check for the following:
a. If low coolant level warning lamp is still illuminated, check for short in circuit between sensor and instrument panel warning lamp and repair

as necessary.

b. If instrument panel warning lamp is now not illuminated, replace low coolant sensor.
