FORD:

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-87 LYNX
ISSUE:
Some ATX transaxles may have been assembled with an intermediate clutch return spring assembly (7F222) that could have one of the four
(4) retaining spring tabs missing. Although a missing retaining tab will not usually affect transaxle function, it could allow the retaining ring
to move out of place and wear against the ring gear.
ACTION:
To correct this, install a new intermediate clutch return spring assembly and retaining ring using the following diagnostic, service procedure.
The chart that follows lists the affected ATX transaxles.

1.
Check to be sure four (4) retaining ring tabs are on top of return spring assembly when transaxle is disassembled for service, Figure 4.
NOTE:
Intermediate clutch assembly does NOT need to be disassembled for this check.
2.
If intermediate clutch return spring assembly has only three (3) tabs, install a new intermediate clutch return spring assembly (E3FZ-7F222-A) and
retaining ring (N800644-S).
3.
Check old retaining ring for signs of wear from contacting the ring gear.
4.
If wear condition does exist, transaxle, converter, and cooler lines MUST be thoroughly cleaned by following the Cleaning and Inspection
procedures in the 1986-87 Car Shop Manual, Volume E, Section 17-25.
