Water Pump: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2.
Remove accessory drive belts, then the engine front timing cover.
3.
Place No. 1 cylinder at T.D.C. of compression stroke by turning crankshaft until pulley keyway is at 12 o'clock and camshaft sprocket keyway is at
6 o'clock. Loosen belt tensioner, then pry tensioner away from belt and tighten one attaching bolt.
4.
Secure tensioner as far left as possible, then remove timing belt.
5.
Remove camshaft sprocket, then the rearward front timing cover stud.
6.
Disconnect heater return tube hose connection at water pump inlet tube.
7.
Remove water pump inlet tube fasteners, then the tube and gasket.
8.
Remove water pump to cylinder block bolts, then the water pump.
9.
Reverse procedure to install. Refer to ``Timing Belt, Replace'' for proper belt tension procedures.
CAUTION: PLASTIC TIMING BELT COVER
Due to breakage and wear of timing belt cover mounting pads, it is recommended to shim cover with flat washers because of a close fit between the
cover and the water pump pulley. Failure to shim the cover may result in interference with the water pump pulley and/or the cam shaft pulley.
