Damaged paint or scratched/gouged "non-grained" areas of the plastic bumpers can be satisfactorily serviced, if the bumper has not been structurally
damaged and the surface damage is not more than .020" deep. Bumper guards are serviced and can be replaced individually. If the bumper structure has
been adversely affected, the bumper must be replaced. Cosmetic damage in the center rub strip "grained" area cannot be serviced as no satisfactory
service is possible.
The recommended cosmetic service for thermoplastic bumper is similar to plastic body part service recommended for "soft facias" or "bumper covers".
Essentially, the procedure consists of grinding around the damaged area (about 1-1/2" to expose the substrate for maximum adhesion), feather edging the
paint around the prepared area, applying the adhesive service material (3M part no. 05900), restoring the surface contour, and painting.
