PERFORMANCE POOR - 1.6L - AIR FILTER CONTAMINATION WITH ENGINE OIL (TURBOCHARGED)
FORD 1984-85 ESCORT, EXP
On 1.6L EFI turbocharged vehicles, the air filter can become contaminated with engine oil causing an air flow restriction and performance loss.
This can be caused by an overload of the engine oil separator system due to a restriction in the zip tube, loss of piston ring sealing, or loss of
turbocharger shaft sealing.
Follow these steps to diagnose this concern:

Check the zip tube for correct installation; it should be aligned with opening in the inner fender panel. (See Figure 12)

Check the zip tube for restriction (pinched) in the flexible portion. (See Figure 12)

Conduct compression check (engine hot) per Engine Shop Manual, Section 21-01.

Conduct engine cylinder leak-down (engine hot) if equipment is available - if leak-down is over 20% continue diagnostics to determine defecting
component.

Remove turbocharger and inspect for excessive bearing wear (per Shop Manual, Section 24-45). If the bearings are worn, the seals will become
