Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation

The cooling fan is activated by the thermal switch when engine coolant temperature reaches approximately 210---220 degrees F. The fan will continue
to operate until coolant temperature drops to approximately 185 to 193 degrees F, at which time the thermal switch opens, releasing the relay contacts
which supply current to the fan motor. On models equipped with A/C, the fan motor will continue to operate whenever the compressor clutch is operating
regardless of coolant temperature. On some models, two fuses are used to protect the fan motor and thermal switch. A 16 amp fuse is located in the fan
motor relay at the left hand dash panel near the steering column. There is also an 8 amp fuse located in the fuse panel. Cycling of the cooling fan will
cause the temperature gauge to read between mid and upper range of the gauge range.
