COOLING FAN - ELECTRODRIVE USAGE CHART

FORD 1985 TEMPO, ESCORT, THUNDERBIRD, MUSTANG, LTD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 TOPAZ, LYNX, COUGAR, CAPRI, MARQUIS

This TSB is being published to assist technicians in identifying and understanding the operation of various cooling fan systems.

A cooling fan timer has been added to the fan controller circuit on most 1985 Tempo/Topaz and Escort/Lynx vehicles to minimize the number of cooling
fan cycles. (See chart for specific application.)

The timer (delay of 2-3 minutes) keeps the cooling fan running when the A/C cycling pressure switch opens during normal operation. The cooling
fan will shut-off if the A/C pressure switch shuts the compressor off for longer than 2-3 minutes.

The timer on Tempo/Topaz and Escort/Lynx vehicles can be disengaged by moving the A/C control lever to the "off" or "heat" positions in all
cases except for vehicles equipped with the 2.0L diesel engine and the Escort/Lynx 1.6L/1.9L engine with MTX + HO + A/C. In these two cases,
the timer will allow the fan to run the 2-3 minute limit after positioning the A/C control lever to the "off" or "heat" positions.

The timer and cooling fan can also be disengaged by turning the ignition switch to the "off" position on all Tempo/Topaz vehicles. However, on
Escort/ Lynx vehicles, the fan will continue to run as in prior years if the temperature coolant switch shuts the compressor off.

On Tempo/Topaz and Escort/Lynx vehicles, the fan is no longer disengaged during wide-open throttle operation as in prior years.

The chart will help identify the type of cooling fan system used on the subject vehicles.
