TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE - SPEEDOMETER DRIVE/DRIVEN AND GOVERNOR GEAR DAMAGE WITH BALL
BEARING DIFFERENTIAL

FORD 1983-86 ESCORT, EXP; 1984-86 TEMPO; 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 LN7; 1983-86 LYNX; 1984-86 TOPAZ, 1986 SABLE

Loss of speedometer, speed control, and/or transaxle governor operation or function may be caused from the speedometer drive gear (17285) wearing
against the differential housing causing gear wear and looseness. This condition will cause speedometer driven gear (17271) wear and a "hourglass" wear
pattern of the governor gear (7053). To service this condition replacement of the drive, driven speedometer gears, and the entire governor assembly is
required.

Refer to the following for disassembly and assembly instructions:

SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR TSB 84-17-12 dated August 14, 1984

SPEEDOMETER DRIVE GEAR (E3FZ-17285-B; black in color) TSB 86-1-6 dated January 13, 1986 (TSB references differential removal without
removing entire transaxle.) For gear removal refer to Car Shop Manual, Volume E, Section 15-20.
NOTE:

Prior to installing the drive gear, install a .3 mm shim (E3FZ-4067-A) between the differential and the speedometer drive gear to eliminate
repeat repairs.

NOTE:

Due to possible internal assembly damage from gear wear, the entire assembly must be replaced.
