Reporting of Completions Upon completion of the required service, return the second copy of the Form 1864 completely filled out and signed by

completed units so that our records will show completion. Please use the Direct Warranty Entry (DWE) system whenever possible to record your

EMISSIONS RECALL U-7E - MODIFICATIONS TO THE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM ON CERTAIN 1983-MODEL YEAR ESCORT/LYNX
VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 1.6L ENGINES. DEALERSHIPS HAVE REPAIR AND PARTS ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS.
Dear Owner:
This letter is being sent to you by the Ford Motor Company as part of our responsibility to insure that emission control systems on our products are
working properly. We have determined that certain 1983-model year Escort/ Lynx vehicles equipped with 1.6L engines may be exhibiting unacceptable
levels of exhaust emissions. Our records indicate that you own one of these vehicles which is identified by serial number on the enclosed form.
DESCRIPTION OF CONDITION:
Your vehicle is equipped with an engine emission control system that may have incorrectly positioned thermactor air supply hoses. Vehicles
experiencing this condition may experience levels of exhaust emissions that exceed applicable standards.
SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED:
Ford is voluntarily recalling your vehicle to modify the engine emission control system. This will be accomplished by installing new, properly positioned
thermactor air supply hoses. These actions will help assure that your vehicle operates within acceptable levels of air quality. This service will be
performed at no charge to you.
IF YOU NO LONGER OWN THE VEHICLE:
Please remove the prepaid return postcard from the enclosed form (identified as FCS 1864). Complete Section 1, and return it to us. This information is
needed to update our records.
TO HAVE THIS SERVICE PERFORMED:

Contact any Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership immediately to make a service appointment. The time needed to perform the repair is
approximately one-half hour. Dealerships have repair and part ordering instructions.

Present the Form 1864 to your dealership when you take your vehicle in for service. The form authorizes him to perform this service. After
repairing your vehicle, the dealership will return the form to us verifying that the required service has been performed. If you lose the Form 1864,
the dealership will still service your vehicle at no cost to you.
IF THE DEALERSHIP FAILS TO PERFORM THE SERVICE ON A TIMELY BASIS AND WITHOUT CHARGE:
If you have difficulties in having this recall service performed, please complete Section 3 of the prepaid return postcard and mail it to us, or you may
wish to contact the nearest Ford Parts and Service Division District Office whose address is shown in your Owner Guide. Any Ford or LincolnMercury
dealership can also furnish you the address.
We regret any inconvenience this recall may cause you. We urge you to have this service performed in order to help assure full protection under the
emission warranty applicable to your vehicle. Failure to do so could reduce your vehicle's ability to comply with any mandated inspection/maintenance
test requirements.
