Distributor Stator - Replacement Procedure

ENGINE - DISTRIBUTOR STATOR REPLACEMENT

FORD 1981 ESCORT 1982 EXP

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1981 LYNX 1982 LN7

This will supplement the 1981 Escort/Lynx Powertrain Shop Manual. The following procedure is approved for removal and installation of the stator
assembly without replacing the entire distributor assembly:

Stator Assembly Replacement

Removal

1.

Using a screwdriver, remove the distributor cap and position it and the attached wires aside so as not to interfere with work area.

2.

Remove distributor from engine block.

3.

Remove rotor.

4.

Remove drive coupling spring with small screwdriver or ice pick. Take care not to damage drive coupling or spring.

5.

a. Using an air hose, blow dirt and oil from the drive end of the distributor.

b.

Put a small paint dot on the drive coupling and the shaft to note orientation for re-assembly.

c.

Place the distributor support tool in a vise and tighten or open vise jaws enough to support drive coupling, yet let pin drop out of the
coupling.

d.

Line-up the drive pin with the slot in the base.

6.

With someone holding the distributor steady on the support tool or vise, use a 1/8" dia. drift and hammer to drive the pin out of the shaft.

7.

Remove the distributor from the fixture. Remove the drive coupling from the fixture and place aside for re-assembly.

CAUTION:

BEFORE REMOVING THE SHAFT FROM THE BASE, CHECK FOR BURRS ON THE END OF THE SHAFT AND ESPECIALLY
AROUND THE DRIVE PIN HOLE. IF BURRS ARE PRESENT, FILE AND POLISH SHAFT WITH EMERY PAPER, AND WIPE
CLEAN BEFORE REMOVING SHAFT FROM BASE TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE LIP SEAL AND BUSHING IN THE
BASE.

8.

After assuring there are no burrs, remove shaft assembly by gently pulling up on the shaft plate.

9.

Check shaft assembly for free movement of the centrifugal advance mechanism by holding shaft in hand and moving shaft plate. Shaft plate
assembly should advance freely and spring back to original position when released. If binding occurs, replace complete distributor assembly.

10.

Remove the two screws on the connector holddown plate on the side of the distributor. (Retain the screws for re-assembly.)

11.

Remove the connector hold-down plate.

12.

Remove the diaphragm assembly.

13.

Remove the three screws that secure the stator retainer to the base.

14.

Lift the stator assembly out of the base by gently lifting up.

15.

Thread connector through hole in the base to complete stator assembly removal.

16.

Dis-assemble stator retainer assembly from stator assembly by pulling the retainer assembly from the stator assembly.

17.

Inspect the stator bumper for excess wear or signs or excess heat concentration, replace complete distributor assembly if bushing is damaged.

18.

Inspect diaphragm "O" ring for cracks or tears, and replace if needed.
