4. Remove the Differential Housing Spreader and reposition the Dial Indicator Bracketry.
5. Measure the ring gear backlash.
(1) Mount the (A) dial indicator on the (B) indicator base.
(2) Position the indicator needle and zero the indicator.
(3) Turn the (C) ring gear without turning the (D) pinion gear and record the measurement.
NOTE:

Measure the ring gear backlash at four places to obtain consistent reading.

If backlash is not within specification, correct by increasing thickness of one differential bearing shim and decreasing thickness on the
other differential bearing shim by the same amount.
6. To increase the backlash, install (A) thicker differential bearing shim and (B) thinner differential bearing shim as shown.
7. To decrease backlash, install (A) thicker differential bearing shim and (B) thinner differential bearing shim as shown.
